Summer events for children and families! Nature Quest Camp and Renewable Energy Tours…

July 2nd, 2012

Some great family events coming up in LqP…

#1: Nature Quest Camp, July 16-19: Intended for children who are entering 4th or 5th grade this fall, the purpose of the camp is to encourage children to consider their relationship with nature by embarking on a quest at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Cost is $40 for the entire camp. Registration is due on July 11. We’ll begin the camp by preparing our passports for a journey that will explore a range of activities…we’ll dig in, get our hands dirty, put on our thinking caps, and tune up our vocal cords. If you have you ever asked: Where does my old pop can go? Where does my food come from and how do plants grow? How do I identify that tree? How do I use a compass? And where does the rain go after it hits my backyard? These questions and more will be answered as we draw, create, sing, act, and navigate our way through these “big” questions. To register for the camp, go to: www.morris.umn.edu/greensummer

#2: Free renewable energy tours on July 14th, July 27th and August 11th, from 2PM-4PM, are being offered by University of Minnesota, Morris this summer. We’ll board the bus at 2 p.m. and be back by 4 p.m.. We’ll tour UMM’s renewable energy facilities–included on the tour are UMM’s biomass plant–learn how corn cobs from local farms can heat and cool a campus; wind–learn more about the power of the wind, step inside a wind turbine; and solar power–see the “behind the bleachers” operation and learn why the recreational fitness pool is so warm. Help us plan! To pre-register and save your seat, go to: www.morris.umn.edu/greensummer

#3: Family Energy Faceoff, two families in our region are “facing off” to save energy and they need YOUR help to win! The Morris Prairie Penny Pinchers are pitted against the New London Mill Pond Minimizers. Each family is working to save energy and resources in their homes and are counting on you to be a part of their team. Just go to the website, join a team, and check a couple of actions that you and your family will take to save energy in your home and to support your favorite team. This contest runs from Earth Day to Earth Day, so you can return to update new actions as you take new actions! To join the action go to: http://www.cleanenergyresourceteams.org/faceoff
